Bad work ethic
SYDNEY, January 19, 2010: Bad work ethic (MX Sydney, Page: 1 By Matt Sun)
Gen Y jobseekers need to learn their place, tone down the arrogance, use a spell checker and dress the part, recruitment experts say.
The Human Resources Centre managing director Katherine Graham said Gen Y jobseekers had a more arrogant attitude in job interviews than past generations. The majority come into interviews with a sense of entitlement, a sense that any employer would be privileged to have them," Graham said.
There is an attitude that ii they have the skills they will shine through, no matter how they present or speak." Graham said 15 per cent of Gen Y applicants dressed completely inappropriately" for a job interview and only 10 per cent present balanced, believable resumes.
The warning comes as the job market gears up for the year, with tomorrow traditionally a peak job hunting day.
IPA Recruitment CEO Rabieh Krayem said the last Saturday in January was usually the biggest day of the year for jobseekers or those looking to change roles.
Careerone.com.au editor Kate Southam agreed that Gen Ys often had casual attitudes, but said employers had to share some of the blame as they had been "falling all over themselves to please Gen Y" from about 2004 economie boom times.
