The old and the restless
BRISBANE, March 31, 2010: The old and the restless
Employers are snapping np "disconnted talent", a new breed ot workers who are taking jobs they are over-qualified tor beeanse otthe GFC.
But these employees are also more prone to leaving in a huff because the Aussie jobs market is on the mend and they become easily dissatisfied, say HR experts.
The Human Resources Centre managing director Katherine Graham said overqualified workers who accepted lower level jobs were prone to leave within six months.
They were nervous about not finding anything else, so they made hasty decisions and are now looking for new jobs and want to move on quickly," Graham said.
She said so-called discounted talent" was a trend of the past year and "they’re the ones moving on now".
Laid-off workers who used to earn $70,000 had taken pay cuts of up to $20,000 to start new jobs during the downturn.
"The motive was, 1 need a role. I’ve been laid off and I’m not sure I’ll get another opportunity,’ so it’s a snap decision to take what is offered," Graham said.
"And that’s why we’re now seeing people move on quickly." At executive level, Graham said the salary cut was more extreme.
They’d go back to the $100,000 package whereas in previous roles ... they might’ve been on a $200,000-plus bonus," she said.
But Graham said leaving within a year was a bad look when it came to applying for a new job.
"It can go against them at the end," she said.
But over-experienced employees usually enjoy a position where learning is inherent to the role if they’re not mentally stretched . . . they’ll move on."
