Y they will not hire you

BRISBANE, January 19, 2010:
Y they will not hire you (MX Brisbane, Page: 2 By Matt Sun)

Gen Y graduates aud jobseekers ueed to learn their place, toue down the arrogance, use a spell checker and dress the part, ac cording to recruitment experts.

It’s a timely message with tomorrow dubbed the best day of the year to hunt for a new job.

IPA Recruitment CEO Rabieh Krayem said the last Saturday in January was traditionally the culmination of a hive of oppor tunity for jobseekers.

"Late January is when people make a voluntary decision to seek a new challenge, likewise employers are looking to drive their business forward with new blood after Christmas." But to make the most of the opportunities, jobseekers need to change their interview tech niques.

Katherine Graham, managing director of The Human Resources Centre, said Gen Y jobseekers had a more arrogant attitude in job interviews than past generations.

"The majority come into inter views with a sense ot entitlement, a sense that any employer would be privileged to have them," Graham said.

There is an attitude that if they have the skills they will shine through no matter how they present or speak.

"My advice would be to be a bit humble, realise you’re at the start of your career and the world won’t land in your lap, remember you’re an undergraduate." Graham said 15 per cent of GenY applicants dressed completely inappropriately" for an interview and only 10 per cent presented balanced, believable CVs.

Careerone.com.au editor Kate Southam said Gen Yers were not as grateful" about job opportunities. They are also more casual when it comes to checking a text message during an interview or turning their mobile off only after it rings." But she said employers had to share the blame because they were "falling all over themselves to please GenY from about 2004".
